Your Winter Bill Exploded and Nothing Changed at Home. It's the Geyser.

Same house, same habits, and suddenly the electricity is hundreds of rands more. There is a real and fairly brutal explanation, and it is sitting in your roof. Here is the actual arithmetic, what a single shower costs you in July, and which of the famous savings tips are worth your money.

The short version

  • Your geyser is typically 30 to 40 percent of the whole bill, and its winter cost runs roughly 50 percent above its summer cost before anyone takes a longer shower.
  • An eight-minute shower costs about R10 in July against roughly R6.50 in January. Multiply that by a family and a month.
  • Set the thermostat to 60°C. The popular advice to drop it to 55 or lower is a Legionella risk, not a clever saving.
  • Timers and blankets both work, but neither halves your bill. They only ever save the heat the tank loses while standing, never the energy in the water you actually use.
  • If your bill climbed and your habits didn't, suspect a dripping safety valve, a scaled element or a stuck thermostat. That is a plumbing fault showing up on an electricity bill.

Every July we get the same call from Durbanville homeowners, and it is never about a burst pipe. It is someone staring at an electricity bill that has gone up by four or five hundred rands, certain that something must be broken, because nobody in the house is doing anything differently.

Usually nothing is broken. What is happening is that a Cape winter attacks your geyser from three directions at once, and the numbers add up faster than people expect. Sometimes, though, something genuinely is wrong, and the bill is the only symptom you get. Here is how to tell the difference, starting with the maths.

Why winter hits your geyser from three sides at once

People assume the winter jump is just longer showers. That is only a third of the story.

  1. The water arriving at your geyser is much colder. This is the big one and almost nobody accounts for it. In summer the mains water reaching your house is somewhere around 23°C. In the depths of a Cape winter it is closer to 14°C. Your geyser is not heating water to 60°C, it is heating it by however many degrees it has to climb. In January that climb is 37 degrees. In July it is 46. That is about a quarter more electricity for exactly the same tank of hot water, before anything else changes.
  2. You genuinely do use more hot water. Showers get longer and get set hotter. And because the cold tap feeding your mixer is colder too, you have to draw a bigger share of the water from the hot side to hit the same comfortable shower temperature. So the same shower pulls more litres out of the tank in winter than in summer.
  3. The tank loses heat faster just sitting there. Most Cape geysers live in the roof, and a Durbanville roof space in July is cold. Heat loss depends on the gap between the water temperature and the air around the tank, so a wider gap means the element switches on more often through the night to top up water nobody has used. This is called standing loss, and it runs at roughly two units a day on a typical tank.

Individually none of these is dramatic. Stacked together they are why the bill moves by hundreds of rands.

What your geyser actually costs, in rands

Let us put real numbers on it. We have used R4.50 a unit for the sums below. Check your own rate before you rely on these, because the City has three residential tariffs and a step-up once you pass 600 units in a month, so your true cost per unit may be higher or lower.

Start with one shower. Eight minutes at a normal flow rate is about 72 litres of mixed water at a comfortable 40°C:

  • In January, that draws roughly 33 litres from the tank and costs about R6.40.
  • In July, the same shower draws roughly 41 litres from the tank, each needing a bigger temperature climb, and costs about R9.80.

Now scale it to a household of four taking one shower each per day, and add the standing loss:

  • Summer: around 7 units a day, so about 215 units a month, or roughly R970.
  • Winter: around 11 units a day, so about 330 units a month, or roughly R1,470.

That gap, about R500 a month, is most of the mystery increase people phone us about. Nothing is broken. The geyser is simply doing considerably more work, and it was already the largest single item on your bill.

Want your own number, not ours?

Read your meter at the same time on two consecutive days, once with the geyser breaker on as normal, and once with it switched off at the DB board for the full 24 hours. The difference between those two days is your geyser's real daily consumption. Multiply by 30, then by your rate per unit. It is the only figure that actually applies to your house, and it takes two days of doing nothing.

And then there's the 7.5 percent on top

There is a second reason this particular winter stings. Electricity tariffs went up again on 1 July 2026. Eskom's bulk increase to municipalities came in at just over 9 percent, and the City of Cape Town managed to hold the increase to its own residents to 7.5 percent, the lowest of the major metros in the country.

Small comfort when the bill lands, because of the timing. The new rate kicked in exactly as the coldest, darkest, longest-shower weeks of the year arrived. So the seasonal jump described above and the tariff increase hit the same bill, which is why this month's number feels worse than a normal winter increase. If you are on a prepaid meter you will have noticed it as units simply not lasting as long as they used to.

What actually works, ranked by what it saves

There is a lot of advice out there, much of it written by people selling something. Here is our honest order, cheapest and most effective first.

1. Turn the thermostat down to 60°C (free)

A surprising number of geysers we open up are set at 70°C, sometimes higher, usually because someone turned it up years ago chasing more hot water. Bringing it back to 60 costs nothing and the City of Cape Town's own energy guidance puts the saving at around 5 percent of your water heating cost. It also slows down scale forming on the element and reduces the scalding risk at the taps. Do not go below 60, and see the section further down for why that matters more than the saving.

2. Lag the hot water pipes (cheap, and consistently underrated)

The first few metres of pipe leaving the top of your geyser sit there full of hot water between uses, quietly radiating it into the roof. Insulating that run is inexpensive, it is the single most overlooked fix in most homes, and on new work it is not optional anyway: SANS 10400-XA requires hot water pipes to be insulated to a minimum R-value. If your geyser was installed before that was enforced, or the lagging has perished and fallen off, this is easy money.

3. Fix whatever is making it work harder (varies)

A scaled element, a dripping safety valve or a failing thermostat can quietly cost you more than every savings tip on this list combined. This is covered properly further down, because it is the one where a plumber genuinely earns their fee rather than selling you an accessory.

4. Fit a timer (modest, and worth understanding properly)

Timers do save money, and the old argument that reheating a cold tank costs more than keeping it hot has been thoroughly debunked. But be clear about the size of the prize. A timer can only ever save you the heat the tank loses while standing, which is around two units a day in total. It cannot save you a single cent on the water you actually use, because that energy has to go in whenever you choose to heat it. Realistically you are looking at 15 to 25 units a month. That is a worthwhile R70 to R110, not the halved bill you will see advertised.

5. Shorter showers (free, and better than any gadget)

Unglamorous, but the arithmetic above makes the point. At close to R10 a shower in July, two minutes off each shower in a family of four is worth more per month than a timer. A decent low-flow shower head does the same job without anyone having to change their behaviour.

What's oversold, and the two-second test that settles it

Geyser blankets are the most heavily marketed winter product in South Africa, and searches for them go up roughly nine times between December and June. They are genuinely useful on the right geyser and close to pointless on the wrong one, and no advert will tell you which one you have.

Here is the test. Put your hand flat on the outer casing of the tank while it is heating.

  • If it feels noticeably warm, heat is escaping through the casing. That is usually an older tank whose factory insulation has had it, and a blanket will pay for itself fairly quickly.
  • If it feels cool, the factory insulation is doing its job. Modern geysers are built to SANS 151, which regulates how much heat they are allowed to lose, and wrapping an already well-insulated tank adds very little. Spend the money on pipe lagging instead.

If you do fit a blanket, don't smother the geyser

A blanket must not cover the thermostat and element cover, and it must never obstruct the safety valve, the vacuum breakers or the drip tray and its overflow. Those components are safety equipment and they need to stay accessible and clear. Wrapping a geyser tightly in whatever came in the box is how a cheap saving turns into a failed inspection, or worse, a rejected insurance claim later on.

The 55°C advice is everywhere, and it's wrong

This is the part we would most like Durbanville homeowners to take away, because bad advice on it is genuinely widespread. You will find articles, forum posts, AI summaries and even official-looking public service posts telling you to set your geyser to 55°C or lower to save electricity.

Do not do it. Set it to 60°C.

Stored hot water is a breeding ground for Legionella bacteria, the organism behind Legionnaires' disease, which is a serious lung infection. Legionella is controlled at 60°C. As the storage temperature drops below about 55°C the risk rises, and a lukewarm tank sitting at 50 degrees for months is exactly the environment the bacteria like. The handful of rands a month you save by running cooler is not a trade worth making.

Equally, there is nothing to gain above 60. Hotter storage means more standing loss, faster scale build-up on the element and a real scalding hazard at the taps, particularly with children or elderly parents in the house. 60 is the number: hot enough to be safe, not so hot that you are heating the roof.

When a high bill means something actually is broken

Everything above assumes a healthy geyser. Sometimes the bill is the first and only symptom of a fault, and these are the ones worth acting on:

  • A safety valve or overflow that drips constantly. If the pipe on your outside wall is permanently wet, you are paying to heat water that goes straight down the drain, around the clock. This is the most expensive small fault in plumbing and one of the cheapest to fix.
  • An element caked in limescale. Scale acts as insulation on the element, so it has to run far longer to push the same heat into the water. The bill climbs first, and then the element burns out.
  • A thermostat that has failed high. If the tank is sitting at 75 or 80 degrees regardless of where the dial is set, you are paying for it every single day. Scalding hot water at the tap is the giveaway.
  • A hidden hot water leak. A leak on the hot side means you pay twice, once for the water and once for heating it. If your water bill moved as well as your electricity bill, that is the signature. Our leak detection page explains how we trace them without breaking up floors.
  • A geyser that has gone quietly noisy. Rumbling, popping or knocking usually means a bed of sediment and scale in the bottom of the tank. That is both a running cost and an early warning: it is the same process that ends in a burst geyser.

A geyser service catches all of these in one visit. The Durbanville factor

Two local things make this worse here than in much of Cape Town.

The first is water quality. A great many homes around Durbanville, Vierlanden, D'Urbanvale and the smallholdings out toward Philadelphia run on boreholes or well-points, and that groundwater has been noticeably harder since the Day Zero years. Hard water means scale, and scale on an element is a direct and permanent tax on every unit of electricity you buy. A properly specified scale-guard or filtration setup pays back through the element and the tank, not just the kettle.

The second is housing stock. Plenty of homes around the Durbanville CBD, Sonstraal and Kenridge date from the 1970s and 80s, with original geyser installations, long uninsulated pipe runs through cold roof spaces and tanks that predate current insulation standards by decades. Those are exactly the houses where the hand-on-the-casing test comes back warm, and where lagging and a blanket make a real difference rather than a marginal one.

Why is my electricity bill so much higher in winter?

Mostly the geyser, and for three reasons at once. The mains water arriving at your house is around 9 degrees colder than in summer, so every litre needs about a quarter more electricity to heat. Everyone showers longer and hotter, and draws a bigger share from the hot side. And the cold roof space means the tank loses heat faster while standing. For a family of four that is roughly 330 units a month in winter against 215 in summer, on the geyser alone.

How much electricity does a geyser use?

It is normally the biggest single item on the bill, commonly 30 to 40 percent of it. A 150 litre tank takes roughly 8 units to heat from cold in winter. A household of four runs somewhere near 11 units a day in winter and 7 in summer. Your own number depends on tank size, thermostat setting, how many showers and how well the tank and pipes are insulated, which is why the two-day meter test above beats any estimate.

Do geyser timers actually save money?

Yes, but less than advertised. A timer only saves the heat the tank loses while standing, roughly two units a day in total. It saves nothing on the water you actually use, because that energy has to go in whenever you heat it. Expect something like 15 to 25 units a month. Worth fitting, but it will not halve your bill, and any product promising that is overselling.

Should I switch my geyser off when I go away?

Yes. For any absence of a few hours or more the old "it costs more to reheat it" claim does not hold up, and for a weekend or a holiday it is clearly worth switching off at the DB board. Just switch it back on and let it come up to temperature before you use hot water again, and if the house has stood empty for a long stretch, run the hot taps for a few minutes once it is up to 60 degrees.

Is a geyser blanket worth it?

It depends on your geyser and there is a simple test. Put your hand on the outer casing while it is heating. Warm means the factory insulation is past it and a blanket will pay for itself. Cool means it already meets modern SANS 151 insulation requirements and a blanket adds very little, so lag the hot water pipes instead. Whatever you fit, never cover the thermostat cover, the safety valve, the vacuum breakers or the drip tray.

Can a plumbing fault push up my electricity bill?

Very much so. A safety valve dripping continuously means you are heating water that runs straight down the overflow. A thermostat stuck high keeps the tank at 75 or 80 degrees. An element caked in limescale, common on Durbanville borehole water, runs far longer for the same result. A hidden hot water leak does both. If the bill climbed and your habits did not, have the geyser checked.

Would a heat pump or solar geyser be worth it?

For a household with high hot water use, often yes, because a heat pump uses roughly a third of the electricity of a resistance element for the same hot water and solar can carry a large share of the load. The honest caveat is that the payback depends on your household size, usage pattern and what you pay per unit, so it is worth doing that sum properly rather than on a brochure figure. Worth knowing too: SANS 10400-XA already requires new builds to heat at least half their hot water by something other than an electric element.
